Over the past decade, more than 100 thousand terrorist attacks have shaken the world. Moreover, in some countries terrorist attacks of various sizes are carried out almost daily. The Institute of Economics and Peace, in collaboration with the University of Maryland, compiled ranking of countries of the world in terms of terrorism.

The study involved 158 countries. The terrorist threat index was calculated using 4 indicators: the number of terrorist attacks in 2012, the number of dead and injured, the amount of material damage.

10. Philippines

Over the past year, 125 terrorist acts took place in the country, in which 120 people died and 213 were injured. The most high-profile incidents occurred in the spring of 2012 at the height of the tourist season in the Philippines.

9. Russia

In 2012, there were 182 terrorist attacks in Russia, in which 431 were injured and 159 were killed. The vast majority of incidents occurred in Dagestan, Ingushetia and Chechnya. More than 90 terrorist acts were prevented by special forces.

8. Thailand

In 2012, 173 terrorist acts took place in the country, in which 142 people died and 427 were injured. The whole world was evacuated by personnel evacuating after an explosion in a hotel in the south of the country in March 2012.

7. Nigeria

During the year, 168 terrorist attacks occurred in Nigeria. 437 people were killed, 614 were injured. The most high-profile incidents were explosions in Christian churches, which were the result of strife between representatives of the Muslim and Christian communities.

6. Somalia

Last year, 175 terrorist attacks occurred in Somalia, 294 people were killed, 493 were injured. Terrorist attacks in this African country occur several times a week. In Somalia, several extremist groups are operating at once.

5. Yemen

In 2012, 113 terrorist attacks took place in Yemen, killing 454 people and injuring 415. The biggest incidents were an explosion during a rehearsal of a military parade in May and a terrorist attack during a funeral ceremony in August last year.

4. India

Last year, 529 terrorist attacks took place on the territory of the country, in which 402 people were killed and 667 were injured. The terrorist attack of August 15 at the height of Independence Day celebrations became the bloodiest.

3. Afghanistan

In the state that closes the top three leaders in the rating of countries by the level of terrorism, in 2012 there were 364 incidents in which 1293 people died and 1882 were injured. In Afghanistan, the terrorist threat comes mostly from Taliban activists.

2.Pakistan

Over the past year, 910 terrorist attacks took place in the country, in which 1468 people died and 2459 were injured. Territory of Pakistan can be considered the territory of Pakistan on the border with Afghanistan, which are practically not controlled by the authorities.

1. Iraq

The maximum level of terrorism recorded in Iran, where there were 1228 terrorist attacks per year. 1798 people died and 4905 were injured. Participation in a terrorist attack in this country is punishable by death, however, despite this, it is Iraq that is considered the center of international terrorism. In addition to the infamous Al Qaeda, there are about 3 dozen extremist associations operating in the state.
